REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION/REGIONAL FLOOD CONTROL ADMINISTRATIVE HEADQUARTERS
RAFI served as the architect of the 77,000 square foot administrative center that houses the headquarters of the Regional Transportation Commission and the Regional Flood Control District (RFCD). RAFI was originally selected to perform a space needs plan and program for the two agencies. The result of this study is a comprehensive plan that outlined space needs for the agencies for 10 years. This study was used as a tool by RTC/RFCD to evaluate their needs for a new building through the options RAFI provided. The RTC/RFCD decided it was feasible to proceed with the design and construction of a new facility.
RAFI was commissioned to plan and design the new facility. The design approach was to follow a series of Las Vegas/Desert Metaphors that shapes the building's form. For example, the exterior elevations of the building represent the many layers of the mineral rich mountains of Southern Nevada. Natural daylight is filtered into the lobby to feed the plant life and to minimize artificial lighting. A trickling water feature travels through the second and third floor lobbies; functionally, acting as a cooling method and; metaphorically, representing the lush meadow beginnings of Las Vegas. RAFI commissioned Fentress-Bradburn and Associates of Denver, Colorado - the architect for the County Government Center - to serve as planning and design consultants for this project.
This building is the recipient of the 1999 Las Vegas AIA Honor Award, 2000 NAIOP Spotlight Award, and 2000 AIA Best of Market Award
